The basic style of
massage used is composed of Swedish massage techniques. Massage
therapy is defined as the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body,
done with knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology of the
structures, applied in a scientific manner for therapeutic results.
Registered Massage Therapists (RMT’s) have completed a minimum of
2200 hours of training at a government approved school of massage.
They have been examined and registered by the College of Massage
Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) under the Regulated Health Professions
Act (RHPA). An RMT is required to possess both general and professional
liability insurance in order to practice. All RMT’s are given a photo
ID badge stating their registration number from the CMTO.
Throughout Canada, Massage Therapists work in collaboration with
physicians, dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and many other
health care professionals.

Receiving a Massage:
Prior to receiving a treatment, you will be asked to complete a
brief and confidential health history form. The massage therapist
needs to know of any medical condition that you may have, even if you
feel that they are not related to your area of complaint. This is
necessary because massage has a wide range of effects.
After taking the health history, the therapist may
assess your
posture, range of motion, muscular strength, ask you to set goals and
discuss a treatment plan. You will be shown how to lie comfortably on
the massage table. Your therapist will leave the room so that you may
disrobe and cover yourself on the table. During the treatment you may
wear as much or as little clothing as you wish. Patients will always
be covered by a sheet or blanket, uncovering only the area being massaged.
Massage oil or lotion is applied over the area to be treated. The
pressure should be within your pain tolerance level, let your
therapist know if the pressure is too deep or too light. Feel free to
ask questions before, during and after the treatment and give feedback to your therapist regarding techniques, pressure applied, etc.
